I thought I’d try VR Headset and gaming. Recently, Meta Quest 3 came out and I bought one. When I was setting up this headset, I constantly felt like I was selling my whole soul and private life to the devil. Now Mark Zuckerberg has a direct video overview of my apartment and he can sell it to his business partners who can use this information however they want. To use it, people agree to give all their rights to him. Facebook’s (Meta) business model involves selling users’ personal data and finding ways to encourage users to voluntarily provide their personal information, by building a product that everyone wants to use.
This headset seemed a bit too big, heavy, and uncomfortable.
How the device was able to detect and mark the area for gaming was quite surprising. Also, the controllers for both hands seemed to work pretty well.
The screen was of good quality and watching videos is quite nice but I’m not very surprised by it. I have Rokid Air AR Glasses and they are just as good.
The audio was also not that great, more like very cheap headphones. Of course, better than Rokid Air AR glasses, but I use AirPods 3rd gen when I use Rokid Air AR glasses.
You can use Quest 3 as an extra screen, surf the internet, and watch VR YouTube which is pretty cool but not practical. Also, the Store and selection of things are very poor. There is like something and at the same time, there isn’t.
The games that were available for free to try out were very poor in terms of graphics and I don’t want to waste my time on such poor graphics. Some games were even interesting to play with others but it feels smarter to spend one’s time on something else in life. I also tried some Steam games like Tomb Raider VR and it was broken. The 3D was amazing and quality, but the game was broken graphically speaking that it was impossible to play. I test Cyber Punk and it was a big screen, which I can get with my Rokid Air AR glasses. Also, some games made me a little dizzy because I’m not used to it. Interesting was the wireless AirLink and how well it actually worked but for me, it seemed more like a gadget and there was very little practical use in real life.
So in the games, those in the Meta store all looked quite similar in their idea and were not wow. The graphics were like 90s game graphics level. Because of the weight, discomfort, and lack of practical real-life application of this Headset, I don’t see the point in it.
If you’re accustomed to gaming on a 49-inch or 57-inch monitor, you might find it challenging to appreciate the Meta Quest 3’s quality. Moreover, having Dolby Atmos speakers around the room, which I believe significantly enhances the gaming experience, may not be as effective when used with the Quest 3. In my opinion, the PlayStation headset might be a better choice. Additionally, it has the advantage of not exposing your personal data to anyone who is willing to pay for it.
Rather, glasses like Rokid Air AR have much more application in real life and I’m waiting for Apple Vision Pro swimming goggles. Maybe they can think and build something that can be practically used in real life.
In my opinion, VR gaming headsets still have a long way to go before they reach the right level. I would say that the device should be very lightweight and not give the feeling of wearing a motorcycle helmet or heavy swimming goggles. They should focus on weight and comfort. I find regular AR glasses to be much more practical.
